Teaching (K-5), A.S.T.


Program and Career Description:

The Associate of Science in Teaching Degree is designed for those students planning to transfer to a four-year school in order to complete an elementary teacher certification (K-5). If you desire to teach high school, you should choose a major in which you desire to teach. For example, if you plan to teach high school history, you should pursue an associate degree with an emphasis in history prior to transferring to a four-year institution.

Transfer Options

Students who want to be certified to teach kindergarten through fifth grade should satisfy the A.S.T. degree requirements, as it is the gateway to making a smooth transition to enrollment in this major at the transfer institutions with schools of education. Therefore, students who plan to take upper-level Middle Tennessee State University courses in Columbia should follow this program.

Requirements for Graduation Include:


• earning 25% of total program credits in residence at Columbia State.
• earning a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
• pass all parts of the Praxis Core Academic Skills Tests for Educators (Reading 156, Writing 162, and Math 150 or have an ACT composite of 22 or SAT composite of 1020).
• having four Disposition of Suitability forms completed on you.
• taking the Columbia State Exit Exam.

* It is recommended that students complete ENGL 1010 , MATH 1410  and MATH 1420 , and EDUC 2210  before taking Praxis Core Tests.

Based on the results of the criminal background check, an affiliate school may determine not to allow a student's presence at their school.
