Major in Tennessee Transfer Pathway with the Emphasis in Secondary Education - Mathematics (A.S.T.)

Sample Academic Plan - Total Credit Hours: 60


Program Requirements - Students may be required to take additional Learning Support courses.  Courses cannot be used more than once to satisfy program requirements. Students requiring MATH 1130  and MATH 1730  could extend the number of semesters required to complete the degree.

General Education Requirements


1History Requirement - Select from HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , HIST 2030 , HIST 2310 , HIST 2320 .

2Humanities/Fine Arts Requirement - Select from ART 1035 , ART 2000 , ART 2020 , ENGL 2160 , ENGL 2860 , HUM 1010 , HUM 1020 , MUS 1030 , PHIL 1030 , PHIL 1040 , PHIL 2200 , THEA 1030 . Literature Options: ENGL 2055 , ENGL 2130 , ENGL 2235 , ENGL 2310 , ENGL 2320 .

5Social/Behavioral Science Requirement - Select from ANTH 1230 ANTH 1430 , COMM 1010 , ECON 2100 ECON 2200 GEOG 2010 , PHED 2120 POLS 1010 POLS 1030 POLS 2025 POLS 2035 PSYC 1030 PSYC 2130 SOCI 1010 SOCI 1040 SOCI 2010 .

*Students should confer with their advisor or a representative of the university to which they intend to transfer to determine the recommended history courses.

**PHYS or CHEM are recommended. Students who intend to transfer to UTC should take either a calculus-based or non-calculus-based Physics sequence. UTM requires Chemistry sequence CHEM 1010  /CHEM 1020  and PHYS sequence. UoM also requires Intro to Biology and lab in place of PHYS 1040. Students interested in transferring to APSU should take CSCI 1010/1011 or CSCI 2000 or a similar Intro Programming course.

Students who intend to transfer to MTSU, ETSU, or UTC, secondary education program should follow the Mathematics AS TTP and not the AST TTP.  ETSU and UTC recommend and MTSU requires that students take education courses after transfer. Students interested in transferring to UTK have two options: a degree and teaching licensure.

Option 1: BS majoring in Math with a minor in Math Education - do not use this TTP; follow the Math TTP.

Option 2: BS in Education with a concentration in Math. If you are interested in this option, follow this Secondary Education - Math TTP.

Additional Requirements for Education Programs:

  1. Students who intend to take the Praxis Core exam are encouraged to take MATH 1420  or MATH 1530  to prepare. While a C or better is not required to receive an AST, most 4-year institutions require a C or better in Math courses.

Additional Degree Requirements

  1. Students earning an AST degree must meet the following additional degree requirements:
  • Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • ACT Composite score of 21 (or SAT score of1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination (Praxis Core) for admission to the university's College of Education.
  • Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (disposition forms)
  1. Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.

Check the website www.tntransferpathway.org to review Secondary Education-Mathematics notes for required courses based on transfer university.  Students should meet with their assigned advisor to determine courses required for the university chosen.

Students and advisors should run a degree audit using Degree Works in ChargerNet each semester to confirm classes are applicable to the program of study.
